Roboseum
The Brief
This is Roboseum! a 4 vs 1 cross-platform battle arena where 4 players team up locally on one PC to do battle against a 5th player controlling a giant menacing robot that is controlled by using an android tablet. This project was completed with a team of 6 other students in a production floor environment using C# and the latest version of Unity while I was attending Vancouver Film School. The view the game is played in is similar to that of an old-school classic game called Smash TV.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges I faced while working on the project was working with and animating pixel art, it was my first project using the style but I had a great time exploring and playing with it to see how I could push the art to reveal as much information about the world and characters as possible. The challenge of using only a few squares to show all the information needed was a fun and exciting challenge.
My Role
For this project, my role was that of the artist, animator, and co-technical artist. I was responsible for the design, animation, and implementation of all the Robot assets. I was also responsible for most of the environment assets, all of the in-game backdrops, the design of the characters, and all character and robot selection screen art.
The goal when designing the look of the game was to have a retro post-apocalyptic feel done using pixel art. This was my first time playing with pixel art and it was a blast, the style fit exactly the look and feel we wanted to create all while creating a chaotic battle arena that you can play with friends.
